THE PROCESS OF
MAPPING | OPPORTUNITY SPACES
I began this research by mapping out what I observed while visiting Martin Drive East. I noticed that there were many vacant lots, boarded up homes, and underused spaces. I mapped these spaces and labeled them opportunity spaces at diferent scales. BIG | Open spaces that which includes vacant lots MEDIUM | Built spaces which includes vacant homes and underused buildings. SMALL | Nooks and crannies that includes alley ways and spaces between homes. COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT | PROGRAMMING
Many community engagement events took place. Questions about what residents like about Martin Drive East were asked. Community responses were used to program opportunity spaces. These engagements evoked new programming, rethinking infrastruture, and catalytic insertion. DEVELOPMENT STRATEGIES | REFLECTED DESIRES
NEW PROGRAMMING | Resident responses dictated the over all program on both an urban and neighborhood scale under Live, Work, and Play. RETHINKING INFRASTRUCTURE | Adult residents want to reuse vacant homes for home ownership and commercial buildings for mom + pop shops and local business. Youth residents want their park back in Foundation Park. CATALYTIC INSERTION | Community engagement prompted residents to determine future growth. |
