Site Design
"Boundaries present themselves to us as the edge of things, as the spatial and temporal limit between the here and there, in and out, present and future...boundaries are not finite, but zones of negotiation," writes Iain Borden in Thick Edge: Architectural Boundaries in the Postmodern Metropolis.
The site design utilizes boundaries in a dynamic way and draws people from the neighborhood together by using an integrated parking lot and market stall concept. The parking needs for the surrounding buildings are maintained while the market provides a place for people to buy and sell produce, food, coffee, and artwork. Each stall is 20' wide and 18' deep which provides enough space for two cars when unoccupied and for vendors during market hours. They're organized in a way that allows for vehicular and pedestrian traffic while providing areas of community and relaxation. The benches next to the ACTS express the diversity of people in the neighborhood by the enscribed words written in different languages. A Multi-Use Space |
